This manuscript, based at the University of Manchester (Gaster Hebrew MS 135) delights with a beautiful cover imagery and other whimsical drawings that 'hold' poem/songs within them. But, my interest was drawn to a lone Ladino song written in elegant solitreo and with only seven stanzas.
The manuscript belonged to the Haham of the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue of London, Haham Moshe Gaster, who became the President of the Folklore Society in 1907. Originally hailing from Romania before his arrival to England fleeing persecution, Haham Gaster may have acquired the manuscript in Romania, attesting to circulation of this sort of manuscript in Ottoman Jewish circles.
More to come on this song, stay tuned!
